Welcome Year 12s!
- There was an excellent assembly held for the year 12s this morning in which Tads C.H., Smit V. and the Liaison Managers explained the work of the Charity Committee, and encouraged year 12s to join us in fundraising this year.
- 25~30 new year 12s turned up to the meeting at lunchtime. Excellent participation - thank you Year 12!!
- Sam M. explained the work of Young Minds, across the country and locally, to the new year 12s and asked for helpers. Peter D. talked about how scheduling is looking for this year, including which charities we are going to support, and when we are going to fundraise for them. Seth P. explained about why we are fundraising for Rain Edge High School in Kenya. Long term support is needed for it. This means that the year 12s will need to get onboard and help out, as they will have to carry on the work next year. The High School have suggested a particularly high target, around £10,000.
- The year 12s are to the 'groundwork' this year of the fundraising, as year 13s take leadership and organisational responsibilities. "Don't get us wrong - you're not our minions!" said Peter D. For example, year 12s could help collect and count the money for the non-uniform day. The more there are doing the work, the lighter the load.
Visitors from Rain Edge and Sure24:
- Visitors Sammy and Millie, from Sure24, would like to come and meet us, and thank us for our work here at Reading School. Unfortunately they couldn't make it today. Maybe they can come and talk to us later on. Sammy will give a talk to the year 13s in chapel morning.
- The visitors from Kenya have been instrumental in challenging the thinking patterns of students here, particularly in Mr. Evans' R.S. lessons. It has "exploded" some of their worldviews (Mr. Evans), by asking questions such as 'why is Britain so rich?' and 'How could you fall into poverty?'
Fundraising for the Refugee Council
- Fundraising for the Syrian Refugee Council, the main target last year, has reached £9243.56. In a last Music Event run by Mr. Meahan, the number is hoped to rise to £10,000 or more. Ms. Honickberg encouraged the promotion of giving on the JustGiving site. Just small amounts, like £1 each, would make a very big difference. Promote giving amongst parents and other students.
Final Exhortations:
- Using the skills afforded us by being in such a massive group, we can employ the 'IT smart' people to help with the website, the 'artsy' to make posters and post them around the school, and so on.
- Students in Year10, as part of the Student Leadership program, are going to split into five groups and be involved in Fundraising for the charities across the course of the year.
